Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I see a private General Practitioner?
Most people who live in the UK are covered by the National Health Service and should be registered with a local General Practitioner. Foreign nationals who are not domiciled in the UK are not eligible for NHS treatment during the first six months of their residency. Some patients find that they would like to be registered with an NHS GP outside of London, closer to their homes, but they want the convenience of having a second GP in London; it is not currently possible to have dual registration within the NHS. Other reasons for choosing to be seen in the Independent sector include better access, longer appointments, good continuity of care (i.e. the same doctor looking after you all of the time). Some patients choose to come here for those reasons and others because they have decided the level of attention they get on the NHS does not suit them.
Is the service confidential?
Like all Doctors licensed to practise in the UK, Dr Tickle is bound by the GMC Duties of a Doctor. Everything which you discuss with your doctor is confidential and cannot be shared with anyone else without your permission. There are a couple of notable exceptions, such as when a child would come to harm or when terrorism or other serious crimes are threatened. If you are also registered to an NHS General Practitioner then it is probably safer to keep them informed of any significant changes in your health and medications but this can be discussed with Dr Tickle at your appointment.
How does Dr Tickle make referrals and to whom?
Referring patients on for specialist investigations, treatments and advice is a core function of General Practice. Dr Tickle is particularly keen to find the right specialist for you; someone who is clinically skilled and likely to offer you the information you need in a manner which suits you. Dr Tickle only refers to consultants whom she trusts and whose work she is happy with.
Does Dr Tickle offer home visits?
Yes. Dr Tickle is happy to visit within North and West London and further afield by special arrangement. The cost of a visit depends on the time taken to complete the visit including travel to and from your home. Visits can be arranged at any time by calling Dr Tickle or her office and requesting a visit. It should then be possible to give you an approximate time for the visit.
How are results handled?
Most blood test results are returned within 24 hours. Dr Tickle will assess the results before writing to you with a copy of your test results for information. If there are any unexpected abnormal results, Dr Tickle will usually telephone you to discuss these.
What are telephone consultations for?
Telephone consultations are very useful for follow-up after starting medication or for general advice about health issues. They are not particularly useful for monitoring the progress of longstanding illnesses, when blood tests will need to be performed or for any visual ailments, such as skin rashes. If you make a telephone consultation and it becomes clear that you need an appointment this will be arranged and no charge will be made for the telephone consultation.
Will my Medical Insurance Policy cover Dr Tickle’s fees?
Some insurance policies will cover General Practice or Primary Care services. Typically International polices and some American Policies will. It is advisable to check with your insurer. When insurance policies don’t cover Dr Tickle’s services, they will often cover any further tests and investigations which are required before you are referred to a specialist.
Which payment methods are acceptable?
Any legal payment method is acceptable; we will accept cash, cheque or credit/debit cards. If you believe you are covered by insurance we would respectfully request that you settle your invoice and then claim back the amount through your policy.
